Hey Danvers! Welcome to the Resilient Danvers dashboard Blog Series. Every month, we’ll post a brand-new blog on an interesting and locally relevant topic that deals with climate change and resilience. Make sure to check back on this page for new posts!
Today, to kick off our series, we will be discussing the new recycling program that went into effect a few weeks ago. This was a highly anticipated and substantial change to our waste services, so now is the best time to learn about it. While we discuss the ins and outs of the program, we’ll also look at how single stream, automated recycling connects to our sustainable waste reduction goals in the Danvers Climate Action, Sustainability, and Resilience Plan (CASPR).
This interview is a Q&A with Erica DeDonato, Recycling and Energy Conservation Coordinator with the Department of Public Works:
What is the importance of waste reduction and recycling?”
Waste reduction and recycling are critical for several reasons. Waste reduction practices, such as reducing, reusing, and recycling, divert waste from landfills and incinerators. This in turn reduces the environmental and health hazards associated with waste disposal. While we want to focus on reducing and reusing before placing an item in the recycling cart, recycling still plays a key role in reducing the need for raw materials to make new items. As the world becomes more interconnected, responsible waste management becomes a global responsibility. Recycling and waste reduction efforts contribute to global sustainability goals and we in Danvers are focusing on our efforts to address environmental challenges.
What changes to my services can I expect with this new program?
With this new program, each household that receives curbside collection services through the Town has been delivered a 65-gallon Green Trash Cart, and 95-gallon Blue Recycling Cart. Starting October 1st, residents are required to use these carts in order to receive curbside collection services. The town will be returning to an every-other-week collection process for recyclables on a Blue/Green week collection schedule.
All information about the new program changes can be found on the Danvers DPW website at https://www.danversma.gov/378/Trash-and-Recycling
What is the benefit of single-stream recycling?
Single-stream makes recycling more convenient for residents. With single-stream recycling, all recyclables, including paper, cardboard, glass, plastic, and metal, are placed together in the same cart. Because of its convenience, single-stream recycling tends to collect larger volumes of recyclables. This means more materials are diverted from landfills and incinerators, contributing to environmental sustainability.
What are the benefits of the new carts?
We have seen other Massachusetts communities utilize the same carts that Danvers has distributed with great success. There are many benefits to these carts including reducing litter, efficient waste collection, durability, and easy maneuvering. The new trash and recycling carts have secure lids that prevent litter from being scattered by wind or animals. This contributes to cleaner streets and outdoor spaces. They also are made from durable recycled materials that can withstand various weather conditions and heavy use over time. The wheels and handles make moving carts the curb easier for residents, and the cart themselves make collection safer for the workers by utilizing an automated system.
How does the automated system work?
Automated trash collection is a modern waste management system that utilizes trucks with mechanical arms or lifters that are designed to pick up and empty standardized carts. These arms are operated by the driver from inside the cab of the truck minimizing the risk of injuries. Additionally, automated trucks can complete routes more quickly than traditional manual collection methods.
How does this new program align with the waste goals in the Resilient Danvers CASPR Plan?
The Resilient Danvers waste goals are intended to support waste reduction in Danvers. By placing limitations on how much residents can dispose of at the curb, we encourage residents to reflect on the waste they are generating every day. Reducing waste is important for several reasons, including environmental, economic, and social factors. Reducing waste helps conserve natural resources, minimize pollution, and lower the overall environmental footprint. Finding ways to reduce your waste can also save money on disposal and cleanup costs.
